64959 km. The dealer
performed the 48-month/64000km service today. They call it their Type 3
Service which includes hot oil flush, change oil & filter, rotate
tires, inspect brakes, check all fluids and lights, inspect major engine &
mechanical components, inspect all belts and tensioners including timing belt,
and inspect transmission fluid. They also changed the spark plugs and the
pollen filter. I provided 6 L of Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w30.
I also asked them to check
left rear-passenger door lock because I noticed that it would sometimes lock
later than the other doors. I also mentioned about my electrical
hiccup and the service advisor said that checking out the battery was part
of the service.
I dropped the car off in the
morning, got a call just after 11 am regarding the rear brakes and the door
lock, and the car was ready as promised at 3 pm, although I couldn't get there
'till about 3:30.
Left Rear-Passenger Door
Lock: They couldn't replicate the
problem (it's only happened to me a few times) but the computer did leave an
error code of intermittent locking. The recommendation is to replace the power
door lock mechanism. Because I am out of warranty, the part is approx. $250 CAD
and with labor, the total cost would be around $350 CAD.
Brake Inspection: Rear brakes are at about 15%. Estimated cost for
dealer to replace rotors and pads: $450 CAD.
Type 3 Service: I didn't get a chance to drive much after picking up
the car, but it feels smoother. I'll need more time to decide whether or not
the new spark plugs made a difference. I found a pleasant surprise: the
technician left the extra Mobil 1 in my car and it looks like they used about
5.7 L--which is exactly to correct amount
. Here are the official fluid capacities
for the 1998/1999 Passats from TSB 00-99-12.
Here's the breakdown of the
total cost in Canadian $ for me today:
