Notes:
- The mirror was not available from Mazda Canada and had to be ordered from the United States. It's back-ordered about 2 or 3 weeks. I'm not sure of the exact price of the mirror; it was factored in to the total price of the vehicle. Update: I got a call from the dealer on 11 June 2002 saying that they had located the mirror and arranged it to be installed on the 18th. Here's what it looks like from behind.
- One unexpected benefit of the mirror is it's size. It's slightly larger than the stock mirror so I can actually see more of what's behind me.
- The cargo mat wasn't exactly what I was hoping for. I guess I should have looked at the picture in the Mazda MPV Accessories Catalogue a bit more closely to see that it really was just a piece of carpet, much like the front mats. I want something that is plastic with a raised lip to catch spills. I may have to order a WeatherTech cargo liner.
Update: 2 August 2002
After living with the mirror for awhile I've discovered that the temperature readings are not very useful because it almost always reads hot.
It seems to get a lot heat reflection from the ground. Apparently the probe takes a reading approximately every 3 minutes to avoid wide variations but in real life this doesn't work very well especially if you're stuck in traffic. For example, I noticed one sunny day in the high 20's (26°-29° C), the thermometer gave readings of 40° C and even 50° C while I was stuck in traffic. It wasn't until I had reached open road and had been driving for awhile before it dropped down to 30° C. I've never experienced this phenomenon in any vehicle I've driven with a factory installed thermometer.
I checked the location of the probe (next to the front tow hook) and it is where Mazda Canada recommends. At this point, the thermometer is only good for telling me simply whether or not it's hot outside--which I could tell anyway without the thermometer
. Because of this, I cannot recommend this mirror with the thermometer. So, save a bit of money and get the mirror with the compass only.
