Stock vs Cool Blue |
Comparison between stock H4 bulb (left) and Sylvania Cool Blue (right) |
Procedure:
- Instructions on replacing the headlamp bulb are printed on page 8-28 of the 2002 Mazda MPV owner's manual.
Notes:
- The stock bulbs appeared very "yellow" to me, especially since I'm used to the HID (high-intensity discharge) headlamps on my Passat. The Cool Blues make a definite difference that is hard to see on camera, but they are definitely "whiter" looking. Plus they're cheap
.
- It much easier to replace the passenger (right) side bulb because there is a lot more clearance there. The driver (left) side is a tighter fit and there are two cables taped across the bulb socket (second cable is hidden in picture) that hampers access. Replacing the driver's side took me about 10 minutes because I was trying to be careful not to touch the glass portion of the bulb and had to squeeze things around the thick cable.
- Sylvania specs the Cool Bulbs at 900/1500 lumens with a colour temperature of 3700. I don't know what the stock Stanley bulbs are rated at. Both bulbs are made in Germany.
- Sylvania also has Silverstar bulbs that have a colour temperature of 4000, that I'd like to try, but they do not currently make a 9003 bulb.
